Opie’s Fine Cars opened in January 1968 with five total employees, including Opie Hendricks, and 12 cars on a 1.5 acre lot on Central Avenue in McKinleyville. It’s been a family business since the beginning: Hendricks’ sons, Greg and Dennis, began washing cars after high school when they were 13 and 14. Today, Greg helps his father sell cars while Dennis manages the various rentals and properties Hendricks has acquired over the years. The most significant change to Hendricks’ business took place on Oct. 4, 2001, when he purchased the Chevrolet/Buick dealership from Mo Olson at PC Sacchi’s in Arcata. At the time, Hendricks employed seven but after the sale went through, he upped that number to 35 and dramatically increased the number of cars on his lot.
